Details

The Hemba people, originally from the Kabambare territory in Maniema province, Democratic Republic of Congo, have a rich history and deep collective memory. Renowned for their determination, this group has established a complex social structure, with a power structure headed by the Mwanana and Twite. Their culture is expressed through rituals that celebrate their ancestors and Vilinyambi (God). The Hemba are identified by taboos linked to their patrilineal Musuu and matrilineal Ilongo lineages. The memory of the Hemba is based on oral narratives handed down from generation to generation, highlighting their conquests and immigration from the Tusu Twitwi to the village of Muebu (found country). They face various challenges, such as land conflicts and the impact of other cultures, notably the Bangu Bangu and Baluba. Preserving their history and culture is essential to maintaining their identity and strengthening their resilience in the face of these challenges. Currently, the Hemba people of Kabambare are organized into three customary entities: Kagulu, Katego and Mugaza in the village of Muebu, of which Kibangula is the capital.
