Comment Clauses

The book deals with the so-called comment clauses, namely you know, you see and I mean. These clauses occur mainly in spoken English. The research is based on the analysis and comparison of four authentic texts two face-to-face and two telephone conversations. The comment clauses are examined according to three different criteria pragmatic function, position within the turn and the response to the use of the comment clauses on the part of the hearer.
