In recent years it has become popular among academics and consultants to talk about compensation and reward management in strategic terms. The strategic context is claimed to make the management of pay an integrated and consistent process rather than the fragmentary process which has characterized compensation management in many organizations. Most organizations today believe, and very rightly, that the employee compensation program is an investment in its most valuable resource. Implementing the new strategies will bring the organization a step closer to realizing the tremendous potential of that investment. Total rewards take a holistic approach to rewards, going beyond the strong focus on pay and benefits which has been the hallmark of traditional compensation practice. Total rewards attempt to optimize the firm's reward offerings to yield the greatest return for reward money spent.
