Contemporary Therapeutic Approaches

Of all the approaches to counseling, the theory of Sigmund Freud popularly called Psychoanalysis seems to be in the fore front in the sense that it did not only revolutionalize the filed of psychology, but also was the first system of Psychotherapy. Believes that man is born with (both) predisposition to develop self, achieve pleasure and achieve his potential i.e. when you think rightly you do things rightly. Man can be destructive and avoid self actualization. There is the tendency to move in one direction as against the other. Man is vulnerable and suggestive, believes that suggestibility is strongest during childhood because the child wants to be accepted by those around him. Rational thinking results in realistic behaviour and irrational thinking results in worthless behaviour.
