Coverage of Stone Pelting in the Local Media of Kashmir
Details
The Kashmiri resistance to the Indian State has seen itself pass through different stages. Staring from Pro- Pakistan pamphlets in 1940 s to the armed struggle from 1990 s, the resistance has throughout gained legitimacy among the majority of Kashmir. One such resistance mechanism is that of stone hurling commonly known as Kani Jung or stone pelting .Similar, to Palestinian Intifada', the protests involved mobilization of the youth, mostly teenagers in order to undertake the symbolic gesture of rebellion or dissent. The representation of this form of resistance in the local media is perhaps an appropriate reflection of how people think of the whole activity despite the regular gagging it suffers. The research traces the emergence and the historical background of this form of resistance in Kashmir while analyzing the pattern of coverage given by the two popular newspapers of the valley.
