Culture and Linguistic Variation of Venezuelan Immigrants in Brazil
Details
The serious economic crisis in Venezuela and the facilities for crossing the border have filled the cities of the state of Roraima (far north of Brazil) with Venezuelans in search of food and a better quality of life. Some of them can be seen working at traffic lights or walking the streets of Boa Vista in search of jobs and housing. Many of them have higher education, but end up taking on jobs that require fewer qualifications and the presence of immigrants from the indigenous ethnic group (Warao), some of whom only speak the indigenous language. In this sense, the visit to the Temporary Shelter for Venezuelan Immigrants (APIV) was a valid strategy as a practice that was planned and carried out by the students of the Federal Institute under the guidance of the teachers of the subjects Spanish Language V, Sociolinguistics, Spanish and Hispano-American Culture and Practice as a curricular component IV. As a result, the following are the articles produced by the students from the field research carried out at the shelter, which helped in their training as professionals and researchers and contributed socially to the extent that they offered their time to teach the Portuguese language to Venezuelan immigrants, as well as material donations.
