Der Atlas gibt einen umfassenden Überblick über den diagnostischen Aussagewert der Phasenkontrastmikroskopie für die gynäkologische Sprechstundenzytologie am Frischpräparat. Nach einer Einführung in die Anwendungsbereiche der gynäkologischen Vitalzytologie verhelfen technische Erläuterungen zur präzisen Handhabung der Methode und des Phasenkontrastmikroskops. Der anschließende Textteil vermittelt eine straff gegliederte Zusammenfassung der wesentlichen Erkennungsmerkmale der Einzelzellen und des Gesamtzellbildes unter physiologischer hormoneller Stimulation und deren endogen oder iatrogen ausgelösten Abweichungen, unter bakterieller Besiedelung und im Laufe der Karzinogenese. Es folgen Beschreibungen von Nebenbefunden, sekundären Zellveränderungen und Artefakten. In gleicher Reihenfolge sind im angeschlossenen Bildteil 143 meist großformatige Mikroskopaufnahmen typischer Zellen und Zellverbände dargestellt.
