A photo album: snapshots from bygone days. This was the way that students, colleagues and friends of Karl Weierstrass (1815 - 1897) wanted to thank and congratulate him on his 70th birthday.For the present volume, this historical photo album showing over 340 faces has been reproduced. The text part of the volume is a remarkable historical documentation including - Biographical data about Karl Weierstrass, introducing also the mathematicians involved in organizing the birthday celebration- Story and background of the album - List of people portrayed in the album - Letters from Weierstrass and others, in order to give some of the atmosphere of those days and to let the perfomers of 1885 speak for themselves. Karl Weierstraß (1815-1897) gehört zu den führenden Mathematikerpersönlichkeiten des vorigen Jahrhunderts, der entscheidend das heutige Erscheinungsbild der Analysis geprägt hat. Das Kernstück des Buches bildet die Reproduktion eines Fotoalbums, das Weierstraß 1885 zu seinem 70. Geburtstag als Geschenk überreicht wurde. Das Album, das über 70 Jahre unbemerkt in einem Berliner Museum geschlummert hatte, enthält die Porträts von mehr als 300 Schülern, Freunden und Kollegen aus ganz Europa - ein außerordentliches Zeitdokument

Karl Weierstrass (1815-1897) was among the leading mathematical figure of the 19th century, a man who had a decisive influence on the way we view analysis today. The centrepiece of this book is the reproduction of a photo album given to Weierstrass in 1885 as a 70th birthday present. The album, which lay hidden in a Berlin museum for over 70 years, contains the portraits of more than 300 students, friends and colleagues from all over Europe, and forms an extraordinary document of the admiration and appreciation shown to him.
