Decentralization and Rural Development in The Gambia:

This work discusses the theory and history of decentralization highlighting concepts definitions of decentralization, participatory development, empowerment, community participation and decision-making, experiences of decentralization and preconditions to decentralization. It also discusses an overview of decentralization in The Gambia focusing on existing local government structure, proposed local government reform and divisional decentralized structures. The book further describes and analyses divisional co-ordination structures, project identification process in a decentralized context. The function of the various decentralized structures are also analyzed and discussed. The impact of decentralized rural development on livelihoods are illustrated; and key recommendations and conclusions emanating from the research and highlighted.
