Dedicated multimodal corpora for ESL curriculum implications
Details
English for Specific Purposes (ESP), and English for Academic Purposes (EAP) programs in English as a Second Language (ESL), and English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teaching-learning situations tend to rely on center-based teaching materials which do not reflect authentic language use by target informants, who are overwhelmingly from outer and expanding circle countries. This is particularly obvious when it comes to spoken academic discourse. This book explores such a teaching-learning situation in Sri Lanka, and through the analysis of a corpus of specialized spoken academic English, which is available in several modes, illustrates how the corpus and concordancing applications are used to decide on the lexis and structures appropriate for the teaching situation. The book is particularly suitable for ESP, EAP, ESL and EFL practitioners, material developers, teachers, students, and researchers in the fields of corpus linguistics, ESL/EFL, Academic English, and New Englishes.
