Design Optimization of Gating System to Produce Defect Free Casting

Front axle housing is a critical automotive component used in the four wheeler trailers and fork lifters. It is a part on which suspension is mounted and hence takes the entire load of the vehicle. It is always subjected to impact loads. Such a critical component was produced by casting method using mostly spheroidal graphite iron. In spite of best gating design the components were still found with casting defects like shrinkage and gas porosities, these components are in regular production and suffer from frequent rejections, So one has to analyze the component carefully and design the gating and risering system to produce defect free casting component. This book helps in studying: 1) The optimization of gating system design for a casting component specialy for front axle housing. 2) Studying spheroidal graphite iron and casting simulation process and its implementation in producing defect free casting.
