Detecting Surface Acoustic Waves Using Surface Plasmon and Aerogel
Details
This research work will demonstrate the use of aerogels sandwiched between a flat and a patterned metal film, so as to facilitate plasmon coupling between the films as surface acoustic waves interact and modulate the grating. Aerogel was incorporated into transducers due to its favorable acoustic and optical properties. Aerogels are known to be the world's lightest strong materials, designed out of up to 99.98% air by volume, which will facilitate operation of the transducer. This work talks about how numerical modeling was used to design Aerogel-metal gratings so as to detect acoustic waves.
