Detroit Techno

"Detroit has a sound of its own: the rattle of conveyor belts and robots assembling cars, the angry shouting of mobs running riot and the repetitive and gloomy beats of Detroit techno reflecting it". Viewed through a cultural and musical perspective, this work takes an extensive look at the history of techno music in Detroit: Its roots, its rise during the 1980's, its unique relation to the post-industrial environment of the city, the diverse transitions it encountered, and its eventual conformation to the globalized techno of today.

Mathias Kilian Hanf grew up in Germany and Colombia. His curiosity about foreign cultures led him to study American Cultural Studies in Munich, Leeds and Washington. As an electronic music aficionado, he has also written about music for more than five years.
