Direct Restorative Materials

Direct restorative materials are those that can be placed directly in the tooth cavity during a single appointment. Direct restorative dentistry constitutes the majority of the work load in daily clinical practice. Restorations are placed and replaced to restore the anatomical form of teeth. With the increasing availability of new dental materials, choice of material for restoration is an important part of a dentist's decision-making process. Many factors are associated with selection of a direct restorative materials which include dentist factor, patient choice and carious lesion characteristics. Dental restorations are the well-known mode of treatment for dental caries. Advances in modern dental materials provide patients and practitioners a number of choices from which to create more pleasing and natural looking restorations. The word "ideal" and "gold standard" are used in recent days to justify why a dentist should buy another "new and improved" product. However, none of the material has all the ideal characteristics.
