Drawing as a tool of communication in architectural education and research

What role does drawing play in architectural education? How is drawing used as an instrument for communication, investigation, and representation in architecture and the construction industry? This book assembles contributions to the 2021 edition of the Lucerne Talks , the biennial Symposium on Pedagogy in Architecture at HSLU's School of Engineering and Architecture in Lucerne. Drawing in Architecture Education and Research offers a closer look at the importance of drawing culture in the curricula of Swiss schools of architecture and in the practice of architecture firms.

Conceived as a compendium and reference book for students, teachers, and practitioners alike, this book explores the potential of drawing as a universal tool for communication and understanding among different societies, language groups, and professional communities. Heike Biechteler ist freischaffende Architektin und seit 2012 wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin an der Hochschule Luzern Technik & Architektur.

Dieter Dietz ist freischaffender Architekt, Gründer und Professor für Entwurf am ALICE-Laboratory, Direktor der Sektion für Architektur an der EPFL in Lausanne und Gründungsmitglied des Kollektivs Architecture Land Initiative.

Johannes Käferstein führt seit 1996 das Büro Käferstein & Meister Architekten in Zürich und ist Professor für Entwurf und Institutsleiter an der Hochschule Luzern Technik & Architektur. Seit 2017 präsidiert er den Architekturrat der Schweiz.

Jonathan Sergison ist Mitbegründer vom Büro Sergison Bates Architekten in London (1996). Seit 2010 führt er das Büro in Zürich. Er ist Professor für Entwurf und Direktor am Institute of Urban and Landscape Studies (ISUP) an der Accademia di Architettura in Mendrisio.
