Eckart von Hirschhausen studied medicine, supported by a scholarship of the Studienstifung des deutschen Volkes, at the Free University of Berlin, University of Heidelberg and the University of London. He did his doctorate on the 'Efficiency of intravenous Immunoglobulin therapy on pigs in the hyperdynamic phase of endotoxemia' and graduated magna cum laude from University Heidelberg. From 1996-1997 he also studied scientific journalism at the Free University of Berlin, without graduating though. In 1996 he started writing, mainly for Focus and Der Tagesspiegel. His first appearance in television is believed to be as a guest-candidate performing magic tricks in Jürgen von der Lippe's show 'Geld oder Liebe' (en:'Money or Love').
