The study focuses on designing a re-entry capsule suitable for both human space travel and retrieving asteroid samples. The aim is to optimize the design using Response Surface Methodology (RSM) by considering key design parameters such as shoulder radius, back shell inclination angle, Mach number, and overall length of the capsule. The study uses simulations in Solid-Works 2022 to observe the aerodynamic performance of the capsule and optimize the design by minimizing drag while adhering to design constraints. The study concludes that effective design optimization is crucial in the development of complex systems, and by employing RSM and considering key design parameters, the performance of the re-entry capsule can be optimized leading to improved processes, products, and overall performance.

Mr. Sri Ram Deepak Akella is a graduate student who has completed his bachelor's degree (B-tech) in Mechanical Engineering from Pragati Engineering College. He has a strong research interest in propulsion systems, thermal engineering, as well as aircraft and rocket design and manufacturing technologies.
