Liver transplantation has gained increasing success and popularity over the past 2 decades as the sole treatment for many end-stage liver diseases. The demand for transplantation has rapidly and overwhelmingly exceeded the available supply of organs, and the current organ shortage constitutes the most important factor limiting the applicability of transplantation. Ischemia/ reperfusion injury during liver surgery and transplantation is one of the main causes of postoperative liver failure and primary graft non function, with the subsequent rise in mortality in these patients. Tri-iodothyronine (T3) has been shown to be a primary hepatic mitogen that induces hepatocyte proliferation in intact rat liver in vivo, through direct hyperplasia. This book provides a detailed analysis of the effects of T3 on liver regeneration after transplantation and on warm hepatic ischemia reperfusion injury. My main focus in this work is to make a more advanced therapeutic options available to patients with liver failure. This book is intended for general surgery, hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery postgraduate students, residents, fellows and surgeons.
