Eleonora Catherine of Pfalz-Zweibrücken (Stegeborg Palace, Sweden, 17 May 1626 - Germany, 3 March 1692), was a Swedish-German noble, regent and administrator, Langravine of Hesse-Eschwege, sister of king Charles X of Sweden and married to Frederick, Landgrave Hesse-Eschwege, (1617-1655). Eleonora Catherine was born to Princess Catharina of Sweden and John Casimir, Count Palatine of Kleeburg. Her parents lived in Sweden from 1622, and Eleonora Catherine and her siblings grew up in Sweden as foster-siblings of their cousin, queen Christina of Sweden, and had the same teacher, Johannes Matthiæ. In 1643, the negotiations started with Frederick concerning her marriage. The negotiations was difficult but was completed in June 1646. she was granted a fortune of 20 000 gulden by her father. The marriage took place in Tre Kronor (castle) in Stockholm 6 September 1646. After the wedding, Eleonora Catherine confessed "on her knees" before her husband, that she had an affair with a French lute-player and actor, Beschon, and was expecting a child with him. Frederick decided to act like nothing and hide the matter, but it became a known scandal.
