Empowerment of Hypertensive African American Women
Details
The book contains two research studies, one qualitative and one quantitative. A small qualitative research study was initially conducted in order to obtain more information from hypertensive African American (AA) women. The findings or identified themes from the qualitative study served to direct the development of a research instrument for a quantitative research study. The findings from this study support the need for early educational intervention with hypertensive clients. In addition, it notes the issues of trust between AA hypertensive women and their healthcare provider. A psychological empowerment intervention was utilized in order to improve health outcomes for AA women with hypertension. More primary intervention is needed in order to reduce the incidence of this chronic condition. Nurses can play an invaluable role in the empowerment of hypertensive clients so they can assume an active role in the self-management and reduced incidence of the complications associated with hypertension.
