Endodontic Emergencies

A true emergency is a condition requiring an unscheduled office visits with immediate diagnosis and treatment. The visit cannot be rescheduled because of the severity of the problem. Urgency indicates a less severe problem; a visit may be scheduled for mutual convenience of the patient and dentist. Endodontic emergency is a condition associated with pain and/or swelling that requires immediate diagnosis and treatment. Knowledge and skill in several aspects of endodontics are required, Failure to apply these will result in serious consequences for the patient. Incorrect diagnosis or incorrect treatment will fail to relieve pain and in fact may aggravate the situation. Emergencies may occur prior to the inception of treatment, during treatment, or immediately after the canal or canals have been obturated.A satisfying and rewarding experience is to successfully manage a distraught patient who initially presented with severe pain for an emergency appointment. Proper operator's attitude, patient control, accurate diagnosis, and profound anaesthesia as well as prompt and effective treatment are all integral components of management of endodontic emergencies.
