English Instruction in Taiwan
Details
"English Instruction in Taiwan" is a case study that focuses on university students' perceptions of their foreign and Taiwanese English teachers. The study also looks at the contrasting teaching styles and beliefs of various Taiwanese and foreign English teachers in relation to the experiences of the university students. Over 600 students were surveyed for this study; their perceptions were then carefully analyzed and a cross-section of the respondents was subsequently interviewed along with a number of their Taiwanese and foreign teachers. The results of the study are both revealing and instructive, offering information for innovating English instruction in not only Taiwan but also other countries where English is taught by both local and foreign teachers. The study brings to light the differences in teaching values between local and foreign English teachers, such as contrasting methods of assessment. By comparing the students' responses, the study offers some original insights into classroom management and how teaching and learning conflicts may be resolved.
