Environmental Criteria in Public Procurement of Construction Work:

Our current patterns of development have revealed to be unsustainable. Pollution and the depletion of natural resources are assuming unprecedented proportions affecting our daily lives and seriously compromising those of future generations. Naturally, the Global Warming issue has forced its way to the top of the political agenda and pleas for a more sustainable development have been felt all over the world. One way to address these problems is through green procurement. The book reviews the links between green procurement, sustainable development and sustainable construction and further details international strategies undertaken to help promote green procurement. The present situation of integrating environmental criteria in public procurement of construction work in Portugal is reported. Best practice recommendations are also suggested. This book is mainly targeted at construction stakeholders and students, who want to better comprehend the green procurement approach.

Brígida Raquel Pires holds a Masters degree in Civil Engineering from University of Minho, Portugal, and is currently an Assistant Lecturer at the same University.
