Esquisses/ébauches

Esquisses/ébauches assembles a cast of international scholars to debate the role of the esquisse (the sketch) and the ébauche (the lay-in or the draft) in the works of key nineteenth-century French writers and artists. These new readings, with their wide-ranging approaches to the question of the finished work, uncover a cultural context in which forms of the unfinished become privileged and highlight both the existence of an esthetic of the unfinished and an emerging poetics of process.

The Editor: Sonya Stephens is Professor of Modern French Literature and Culture at Royal Holloway, University of London. She received her Ph.D. in French from the University of Cambridge. She has published widely on Baudelaire and nineteenth-century French culture and is the author of Baudelaire's Prose Poems: The Practice and Politics of Irony. She is also the editor of A History of Women's Writing in France and XIX Journal of the Society of Dix-Neuviémistes. She is currently working on her next book, The Art of the Unfinished: Representing Process in Nineteenth-Century France.
