Recent studies have shown that there are fewer than 500 of these wolves which are actually surviving. The main causes which are triggering the extinction of this species are habitat degradation and exposure to harmful disease. More importantly, scientists have underlined that the African wolf has a rare gene type which seem to be to weak to be immunized against the multiple diseases. It has also been found that unlike other wolves, the Ethiopian wolves are very selective about their partners. As a matter of fact, their gene type remains rare since they hardly mix their genes and tend to socialize only within their groups.
