European Union Engagement and Political Institutions in Nigeria

The book European Union Engagement and Political Institutions in Nigeria provides an in-depth analysis of the European Union's strategic support to Nigeria's democratic governance through the European Union Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria (EUSDGN) programme. It explores how EUSDGN, implemented in multiple phases, has contributed to strengthening core political institutions such as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the National Assembly and the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC). Through funding, technical assistance, and institutional partnerships, the EU has aimed to promote credible elections, inclusive political participation, and democratic accountability. The book critically evaluates the impact of EUSDGN on electoral reforms, party system development, voter education, and gender inclusion in politics. It concludes that while the programme has enhanced transparency and institutional capacity, challenges such as elite resistance, implementation gaps, and insecurity continue to limit its transformative potential.
