Evaluating the Power Sector in India: An Economic Perspective

Electricity is vital for a nation's development, driving industries, agriculture, and daily life, particularly in developing countries. India, the fourth-largest energy consumer after the USA, China, and Russia, faces growing energy demand despite limited resources. Globally, 18% of the population lacks electricity, with rural areas most affected. India's rural electrification programs, including the Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission and Rajiv Gandhi Grameen Vidyutikaran Yojana, aim to achieve full electrification by 2025. While these initiatives improve access to clean water, food storage, and productivity, challenges like environmental impacts persist. Renewable energy technologies are pivotal in addressing these issues, making India's energy scenario a critical area for study in energy economics.
