Evaluation of the implementation of the national IMCI protocol in severely acutely malnourished children aged 6 to 59 months

The implementation of the national PCIMA protocol in Burkina Faso is effective, but has many shortcomings, which does not allow for better management of severe acute malnutrition (SAM). The objective of the study was to evaluate the quality of SAM management in children aged 6-59 months in urban health centers in Ouagadougou in accordance with the recommendations of the national protocol for integrated management of acute malnutrition (PCIMA). Based on a descriptive cross-sectional study, data from 108 children aged 6-59 months in SAM, managed in the urban CSPS of the Boulmiougou health district, were analyzed. Non-participatory observation of care, completion of a questionnaire sent to staff, and verification made it possible to collect the data required for analysis. The study found that none of the CSPSs visited had all the equipment (materials and supports) needed to properly manage SAMs, and none of the CSPSs had done triage at the time the SAMs were managed.
