An extrasolar planets are planets outside our solar system. Though their existence was first proposed by an Italian philosopher and astronomer Giordano Bruno in his theory of infinite universe that suggested that every star had its own planetary system, the first exoplanet was discovered in 1992 orbiting the pulsar PSR B1257+12. Since then astronomers have identified more than 500 worlds orbiting around around distant suns, suggesting that extrasolar planets may be relatively common throughout the universe.
