Families and post-prison social reintegration in Burundi.
Details
This book outlines the role of the family in the process of post-prison social reintegration of former prisoners and the related challenges in Burundi. Families and relatives of prisoners note that they prefer to start by assisting them while they are still in prison, not only to accompany them through prison life, but also to prepare for their return. They also try to maintain family ties. They help them to do small jobs that they can even do after their release. After their release, their families are considerably involved in order to help them succeed in their socio-professional integration. They welcome them after their release and help them find a job. If they are still of school age, they help them get back into school, etc. Thus, some challenges are related to family involvement. Among others, we can highlight the weight of the prison stigma, the stigmatization, the disqualification. The absence of companies in charge of post-prison reintegration, the socio-economic precariousness, etc.
