Fetal death in utero at Kamina General Hospital in D.R. Congo

The objectives of this study were to determine the frequency of MFIU at Kamina RGH, to describe the clinical characteristics of affected patients and fetuses and to identify maternal risk factors. Methodology: This was a case-control study nested within a cross-sectional descriptive study conducted between 2014-2015. It involved 53 cases of mothers of fetuses who died in utero and 106 controls, consisting of living mother-newborn pairs. Results: The frequency of MFIU was estimated at 13.9%. The majority of patients were referred or evacuated and admitted for delivery. Clinically, the presence of IUF was associated with absence of AFM, poor EG on admission, abnormal blood pressure, mucocutaneous pallor, milking and genital haemorrhage. In 52.8% of the cases, the induction was artificial and the low delivery route represented 66.0%. Complications were noted in 32.1%. Factors significantly associated with IUF were advanced maternal age, illness during pregnancy, village residence, low level of education and ANC follow-up in a peripheral health centre.
