Fields of Sight

Fields of Sight is a unique collaboration between photographer Gauri Gill and renowned Warli artist Rajesh Vangad. The series began in early 2013 in Ganjad, Dahanu, an Adivasi village in coastal Maharashtra, India. A new visual language emerged symbiotically from Gill's initial experiences of photographing the landscape. Looking at her contact sheets, she perceived that although the camera was capturing the distinct 'chameleon-like' skin of the landscape, it was missing vital aspects of what was not apparent to the eye, yet was vividly relayed in the great mythical and experiential stories narrated to her by Vangad. The photographs by Gill, inscribed by drawings by Vangad, reconfigure the photographic site both formally as well as conceptually, to arrive at new documents of multiple truths and knowledge systems. In the act of viewing the landscape through the eyes of Vangad, Gill rekindles the need to challenge the way we see things today, what our eyes capture and what may elude them. 'As though one were photographing an old home, and the resident of the house came out, and began to speak'.

Rajesh Vangad (1975, Ganjad, Indien) vertritt den Malstil des Warli-Stammes. Er hat viel von seiner Mutter, Ladhki Devi, und später auch von Meistern wie Jivya Soma Mashe gelernt. Er kreierte bemerkenswerte Wandmalereien für das Kunstgewerbemuseum in Neu-Delhi, das Tata Memorial Hospital in Mumbai und den T2 Terminal des Internationalen Flughafens von Mumbai. Vangad veröffentlichte drei Bücher: My Gandhi Story (Tulika Books), Kabir Saamagri (als Teil des Kabir-Projekts) und The Indian Crafts Journey sowie eine Landkarte von Maharashtra (Dastkaar Haal Samiti). Vangad hat in indischen und internationalen Galerien ausgestellt und gemeinsam mit der Fotografin Gauri Gill die Serie Fields of Sight erarbeitet, die weltweit gezeigt wurde, untere anderem auf der Documenta 14 in Kassel, auf der 7. Biennale in Moskau und der Triennale Prospect 4 in New Orleans. Gauri Gill (1970, Chandigarh, Indien) ist Fotografin mit Wohnsitz in Neu-Delhi. Mehrere laufende Projekte dokumentieren ihren stets aufrechterhaltenen Glauben an kollektives Arbeiten, «aktives Zuhören», an Fotografie als Erinnerungsarbeit. Gills Werk beschäftigt sich mit indischen Identitätsmerkmalen wie Kaste, Klasse und Gemeinschaft mit direkter Auswirkung auf Mobilität und Sozialverhalten. In ihrem Werk drückt sich Empathie, Staunen und ein grosses Verständnis für Überlebensstrategien aus. Gill hat sowohl in Indien wie auch im Ausland ausgestellt: auf der 58. Biennale in Venedig, im MoMA PS1, New York, auf der Documenta 14 in Athen und Kassel, auf der Kochi-Biennale 2016 und im Smithsonian Institution, Washington D.C. Ihre Arbeiten sind in den Sammlungen international bekannter Institutionen vertreten, und 2011 wurde ihr der Grange Award, Kanadas wichtigster Fotopreis, verliehen. Gauri Gill hat folgende Bücher in der Edition Patrick Frey veröffentlicht: Balika Mela (2012), Acts of Appearance (2022) und Fields of Sight (2023).
