Details

Paper is a common product that is part of everyday lives. In the printing of some magazine grades, a defect can be generated called "fluting". This defect is waviness around some images that appear in the machine direction. This defect can be controlled to some extent from empirical experience, but a good understanding of basic mechanisms that involve fluting and factors affecting it can help in reducing it to large extent.I have developed a novel technique to characterize this waviness and studies involved using my laser technique method showed that heat and moisture changes can cause fluting and no tension is required to generate flutes. I thank Dr. Douglas Bousfield and University of Maine for giving me this opportunity.
