The purpose of this book is to address the theory of the Eastern state, taking as its object of study Japan's political institutions from the classical, feudal and modern periods, analysing their forms of state, political and social organisation, as well as the relationship between the Emperor and the other political powers of the Japanese Empire. The text evaluates the forms of Japanese state that existed before the Meiji Restoration, which ended in 1868, analysing the Yamato State and the three forms of Bakufu, in which political power was divided between the Emperor and the military figure of the Shogun.

Rafael Machado Costa holds a Bachelor's degree in Law from Ritter dos Reis University and a Bachelor's degree in Art History and a Master's degree in Visual Arts with an emphasis on Art History, Theory and Criticism from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul. He is a researcher in the fields of Art History, Comics History and State Theory. He is also an author and literary editor.
