Game of Thrones in Brazil
Details
The aim of this book is to reflect on the processes of reading, reception, and adaptation of the first two volumes of the literary series A Song of Ice and Fire, A Game of Thrones (2010) and A Clash of Kings (2011), by American author George R.R. Martin, as well as the first two seasons of the television series produced by HBO, Game of Thrones, aired in 2011 and 2012. To this end, it was necessary to analyze the construction and characterization of the characters, especially in the representations of archetypal figures such as heroes and villains, as well as the reaction of part of the audience when witnessing the somewhat unexpected deaths. Martin constructs his characters loaded with characterizations already canonized in certain narrative styles, which therefore generates specific expectations in those who read or watch the series; the rupture of these expectations generates a huge debate about what the real themes of the works are, calls ethical and moral concepts into question, and ultimately destabilizes the audience's expectations, forcing them to restructure and fill them with new interpretations.
