Gated Communities in Nigeria

The growth of gated communities around the world today is due to a number of reasons such as security, lifestyle, status and a search for community. Gated communities are creating problems of fragmentation of the urban fabric as well as deterioration of the public realm due to privatization of public space. The concept of gated communities in Nigeria is most prominent in the city of Lagos. Due to the disproportionate distribution of crime in the city of Lagos, residents adopt various measures to mitigate crime within their neighbourhoods. Some of these measures include living in gated communities and this has led to the increase in the growth of gated communities in the Lagos, which has also gradually spread to other cities in the country.
