The development of "Emirates" "Etihad" and other airlines has rendered the UAE as one of the most important air connection hubs around the world, while the quality of services sets the standards for modern commercial aviation. Urban development projects like luxurious hotels, casinos, residential areas which offer ultra rich, rich and less rich people from all around the world endless opportunities for entertainment, shopping and tourism. However, behind the bright lights, there is a dark side of UAE that cannot be ignored: its treatment of migrant workers and its link to human trafficking. This work aims to uncover the darker side of the UAE, exposing the various degrees and levels of exploitation of migrant workers, usually from Asia and Africa that comprise most of the UAE's labour force, who are being denied basic liberties.

Vassilios Grammatikas is an Assistant Professor at the Dept. of Political Science of the Democritus University of Thrace in the field of Public International Law, specializing in the protection human rights in general and minorities in particular. He has extensive teaching and research experience, while he was involved in election observation.
