The National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS) of the United States recognized heavy metal music artists for the first time at the 31st Grammy Awards. The category was originally presented as Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance Vocal or Instrumental joining two of the most popular music genres in 1980s. Jethro Tull won that Grammy Award for Crest of a Knave beating Metallica, which were expected to win with ...And Justice for All. This choice led to widespread criticism of NARAS, as journalists considered that the music of Jethro Tull does not belong to the hard rock or heavy metal genres. The NARAS then created the Best Hard Rock Performance and the Best Metal Performance categories, thus separating the genres. The Best Metal Performance category was first presented at the 32nd Grammy Awards, and was again subject of controversy when Soundgarden's Chris Cornell was perplexed by NARAS' choice of put Dokken in this category. Metallica who was among the nominees won for "One", repeating the feat at the 33rd Grammy Awards with a cover version of Queen's "Stone Cold Crazy" and at the 34th Grammy Awards for Metallica.
