Details

The book deals with the origin of drama as a performance. It is based on a research about the roots of the dramatic genre both in Egypt and in Greece in order to analyze the background of its outset. It shows the direct connection of music, theatre and dance with the first sacred dramas. Performing Egyptian practices are compared with the early Greek theatrical experiences that led to the birth of tragedy. The figures of Osiris and Dionysus founded the mythical account where ritual celebrations and the use of myth as an expression of behaviour and codification of cultural contents blended into a scenic language. Lastly, the book presents the circumstances that directed Egyptian and Greek theatrical experiences to different paths but allowing Western theatre to start off. This is a transversal approach that involves analyzing archaeological, philological, iconographic, historic and musicological sources, and should be useful to scholars of the Humanities fields, to professionals in Performing Arts and Music, or o anyone else who is interested in Egyptian and Greek civilizations.
