The movie starred Preston Foster, Lloyd Nolan, William Bendix, Richard Conte, and Anthony Quinn, and marks the film debut of Richard Jaeckel. The film recounts the fight of the United States Marines in the Battle of Guadalcanal, which occurred only a year before the movie's release. While the film has notable battle scenes, its primary focus is on the characters and back stories of the Marines. The film begins on a beautiful sunny day while the men rest and wait and wonder where they are going. Here you are introduced to the characters and learn just who these men really are. The tense moments before landing show the men preparing for the unknown, each in their own way. Once they land on the beach head, the film shows the soldiers journey as the try to take and hold the island. The movie was produced by Bryan Foy, who also produced Berlin Correspondent, Chetniks! The Fighting Guerrillas, and PT-109.
