Halting Boko Haram/ISWAP in Cyberspace
Details
Terrorists use cyberspace and social media technology to create fear and spread violent ideologies, which pose a significant threat to public security. Cyberspace is increasingly becoming the platform to promote terrorism because it allows easy access to actors to disseminate information beyond geographic borders. The Internet and social media create alternative realities for actors, and audiences and users are influenced by the information given to them by strangers. Terrorists use of websites, blogs, YouTube, Twitter, and Facebook to influence people is on the rise globally, and the security community has not developed systematic measures to mitigate terrorist activities such as the manipulative use of new channels to influence the public.
