Handbook for Laboratory Technicians, Teaching and Research Assistants

The old days of easy-going attitudes to laboratory safety and teaching are over. In addition, there is a clarion call to bridge the gap between theoretical and practical aspects of chemistry and other sciences to make them appealing to the younger generation who are gradually loosing interest in science-related disciplines. The overall objective of this handbook is to introduce a comprehensive overview on the fundamentals of laboratory teaching and safety for laboratory workers in the chemical sciences as well as other personnel in the allied sciences. Two unique features are evident in this handbook. First, the book presents the how of laboratory teaching. It is not intended to be a cookbook that presents a set of instructions to be followed by the laboratory instructor. Rather, self-appraisal, fundamental principles, and skill development required for effective laboratory teaching are detailed. Second, the book gives a lucid introduction to laboratory management, chemical safety and prudent chemical handling. Finally, remember, to teach is to learn twice. Dr. Nsiah holds both MSc. and PhD. degrees in Analytical Chemistry from University of Alberta, Canada, and BSc (Hons.)in Chemistry and Diploma in Education from University of Cape Coast, Ghana. He has an extensive training and experience in Lab Teaching, and Lab Safety and Management. Currently, he lectures at the University of Cape Coast, Ghana.
