His career began after the end of World War II in Göttingen. He moved to Switzerland in the 1970s, where he still lives today. His children, Anne Bennent and David Bennent also work as actors. In 1980 Bennent was nominated for the César Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in The Last Metro.
