Herbal medicine in periodontics

Periodontal therapy essentially aims at eliminating the bacterial biofilm, the main etiological agent of periodontal diseases. It thus calls for a local mechanical action often associated with a chemical treatment based on antiseptics and/or antibiotics. However, the untimely and often uncontrolled use of these chemical agents by patients, and/or inappropriate or non-personalized prescriptions by practitioners are at the origin of bacterial resistance and long-term adverse effects. All this leads us today to the use of natural remedies without danger for the general and periodontal health by calling upon medicinal plants with numerous therapeutic assets. Thus, this work proposes to deal with the contribution of phytotherapy, in its various forms (plants in their entirety or in various extracts), in the daily management of periodontal patients, for therapeutic or preventive purposes, in order to have a clinical guide within the reach of periodontists in order to personalize their prescriptions according to the various indications and clinical situations.
