Hero and PTSD Stories Told by Male Veterans Returning Home
Details
Returning Global War on Terrorism veterans to contemporary American society must navigate the complex and enigmatic intersectionality of hero and PTSD cultural narratives throughout their reintegration experiences. Oftentimes, the stories veterans tell of their own biographical experiences are wholly inconsistent and incompatible with widely circulating cultural messages about them as disembodied people. Honorary social status, as conferred upon American veterans in the United States and arising exclusively within hegemonic notions of masculinity, can work to disguise the lived reality of returned veterans and lead those who experience Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder feeling trapped between who they are, and who they are widely believed to be.
