It is the only known example of a city in the Jewish diaspora of this size that retained a Jewish majority for centuries. The Jews' arrival was mostly the result of the Alhambra Decree in 1492, which expelled the Jews of Spain. Thessaloniki's Jews are deeply linked to its history. The influence of this community both culturally and economically was felt throughout the Sephardic world. The community experienced a golden age in the 16th century, and a relative decline until the middle of 19th century.
