HIV/AIDS and disabled people in Cameroon
Details
The Cameroonian government has made the fight against HIV and AIDS a national priority. However, the specific needs of people with disabilities are not always taken into account in national strategic plans to combat HIV/AIDS. In general, society believes that people with disabilities are sexually inactive or not very active, which implies that they are less exposed to sexual risks such as sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and HIV. A survey of knowledge, attitudes and practices (KAP) in the city of Yaoundé and the commune of Obala enabled us to establish the basic values involved, and to envisage interventions that would provide them with capabilities to increase their knowledge, know-how and interpersonal skills. The general objective was to determine the basic values concerning the knowledge, attitudes and practices of disabled people in the city of Yaoundé and the commune of Obala with regard to HIV/AIDS.
