Holistic education for sustainable development in chemistry

New education for sustainable development in chemistry is holistic, inquiry-based and socio-constructivist. The topic of this book is both internationally and nationally interesting and current. Chemistry is related to numerous aspects of daily-life. In the field of education, chemistry should be approached in a more relevant and socially activating manner. The holistic and inquiry-based chemistry education presented in this book supports versatile studying and citizenship skills in a new way. It motivates students to study chemistry and guides them to take sustainable development into account. Education for sustainable development is needed at all school levels. The approaches presented in this book may be applied on all levels of education. The results may be used to promote sustainable development in the planning of chemistry education and the education of chemistry teachers.

Marianne Juntunen, a chemistry teacher, an engineer and a PhD in chemistry teaching, finnished her work about Sustainability in Chemistry Education in University of Helsinki, Finland in July 2015. Her main interests are related to socio-scientific issues in education. She teaches in a small school in Northern-Lapland and volunteers for NGOs.
