Gingivitis involves only the gingiva while peridontitis involves cementum, alveolar bone, and periodontal ligament. The main causative factors are plaque and calculus. Periodontitis is an infectious disease caused by various bacteria. In response to infection body's defensive cells play an important role in protecting periodontium. But the infectious load is increased, and the body's defensive cells negatively affect the body's defense mechanism.
