Household solid waste management in Alexandria, Egypt

The issue of waste is nowadays a real problem in all the urban centers of the world, especially those of developing countries. The present study focuses on the problems related to the recovery of solid household waste in the city of Alexandria. The diagnosis of waste management has shown that a minimum institutional and legal framework exists to better organize and promote environmentally sound waste management. This can help to prevent the social and health risks associated with poor management of the sector in an acceptable manner. However, there is confusion in the exercise of the activities and competences of the actors and the local authorities in Alexandria. At the level of the Alexandrian population, environmental awareness in terms of individual and collective responsibility for the preservation of the environment is not yet anchored in the habits. Educational measures and communication programs for a change in behavior have remained very general and limited.
